Mad Men Cocktails

Here is a collection of cocktails from Mad Men. I plan to create a checklist similar to the James Bond Cocktail List, and I will be sure to post when it is ready.

But until then, here is a quick list of Mad Men Cocktails:

Old Fashioned – This classic cocktail is a favorite of Don Draper, the show’s protagonist. It’s made with bourbon or rye whiskey, sugar, bitters, a dash of water, and a twist of orange peel.

Martini – A favorite of Roger Sterling, and another favorite of Don Draper, the martini is made with gin or vodka and vermouth, garnished with a lemon twist or olive.

Manhattan – This cocktail is made with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, garnished with a cherry.

Bloody Mary – A simple mix of vodka and tomato juice, over ice in a tall glass. You can also spruce it with other additions like hot sauce, and garnish with celery and lemons.

Gibson – The classic Gibson is made with gin and dry vermouth, garnished with a cocktail onion. Don Draper orders his with vodka instead of gin.

Whiskey Sour – A mix of bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup, and an egg white, shaken over ice and strained.

Gimlet – Gin, lime juice, and simple syrup, shaken over ice. And of course, Don orders his made with vodka.

Mad Men Cocktails – Don Draper’s Old Fashioned

So, Dear Reader, let us endeavor into Mad Men!

As I am doing with the Bond movies, I plan to review the drinks in Mad Men in order, and see which ones we like best.

As you all know, I am a big fan of my New Fashioned, which is basically an Old Fashioned, made with simple syrup that is made with Splenda, rather than sugar.

As it turns out, the Old Fashioned is a favorite of Don Draper, Mad Men’s protagonist. He makes it classically old fashioned, using sugar and water, rather than syrup. His is made with bourbon or rye whiskey (which he discusses), sugar, bitters, a dash of water, and a twist of orange peel. He muddles then sugar and orange with the water.

After watching Don make this, I decided to start just using my simple syrup mix, and muddling an orange and adding bitters, then a cherry. This made the drink more enjoyable, not only from a taste, but because I enjoy the mixing.

So, now, let us start reviewing Mad Men drinks in order – starting next week!
